The Berlin Definition of ARDS

Until recently, the most accepted definition of ARDS for bedside and clinical trials  was the American-European Consensus Conference Definition (AECC) published in 1994. This has been superseded in 2011 by the Berlin Definition of ARDS.
What are the components of the new definition?
The components that have been modified as against the AECC definition are the following:-
1.Oxygenation
2.Timing
3.Chest X Ray

1.  Oxygenation:
a)  No use of the term ALI any longer
b)  PaO2/FiO2 with PEEP or CPAP of at least 5 cm water
c)  PaO2/FiO2 with PEEP or CPAP of at least 5 cm water Severe 100 moderate 100-200 mild 200-300
2.  Timing
Acute onset less than one week of exposure to known risk factor or worsening of respiratory symptoms
3.  Chest X Ray
a)  Bilateral opacities
b)  In at least 3 quadrants
c)  Not fully explained by pleural effusions, atelectasis or nodules
d)  Cardiogenic pulmonary oedema excluded by Echocardiography and cardiac evaluation

NO USE OF ALI
NO MORE USE OF WEDGE PRESSURE
